19 Tips to Reduce Parkinson’s Disease Related Nausea & Dry Mouth

Parkinson’s disease is usually associated with resting tremors and other mobility limitations. There is, however, another symptom that comes with Parkinson’s that can be often overlooked: nausea.

The feeling of sickness with an inclination to vomit is bad enough as it is. But to constantly suffer with it can strain a caregiver’s relationship with someone living with Parkinson’s.

As with most treatments, not everything will work for everyone. But to help you move in the right direction, we have compiled a list of tips to help either prevent or relieve nausea:

  1. Go for cold drinks
  2. Avoid citrus juices and other acidic drinks
  3. Drink liquids between meals
  4. Eat plain foods like saltine crackers or plain bread
  5. Avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods
  6. Eat slowly, and smaller, more frequent meals
  7. Don’t mix hot and cold foods
  8. Eat cold or room-temperature foods to avoid getting nauseated from the smell of hot foods
  9. Rest after eating, but keep your head upright
  10. If you wake up feeling nauseated, have some crackers to settle your stomach
  11. Try to eat when you’re less nauseated

Dry Mouth

Some Parkinson's medications may leave your mouth feeling extra dry. If they do, try the following tips for relief:

  1. Drink at least 8 cups of water each day. Check with your doctor to see how much you need to be drinking
  2. Limit caffeine from coffee, tea and soda
  3. Soften breads, toast, cookies, or crackers
  4. Take a sip of water after each bite of food to moisten your mouth and help you swallow
  5. Add sauces to foods to make them soft and moist
  6. Eat sour candy to help make more saliva and moisten your mouth
  7. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, as they can dry out your mouth
  8. If the problem still persists, you may want to ask your doctor about a prescription for artificial saliva
